The list...

Aug 9, 2011
When I was, I don't know maybe 15 or 16, I made a list. It is a list of attributes and skills I want my Man to have. Every once in awhile I return to the list to partially laugh at some of the things I put on there, but mostly to remind myself that I won't just date any guy just because. I want a keeper.

So today I will share part of my list (lucky you):

not in any particular order

1) Doesn't smoke or do drugs
2) Nice hair- length not the issue, but well-kept
3) Share same beliefs
4) Ballroom dance-either knows how or is willing to try (at least a good waltz and foxtrot)
5) Well groomed
6) Has a job- well yeah that would be an obvious one, thank you 15 yr old :)
7) Sense of humor (remember I'm a sanguine)
8) Ok with being spontaneous
9) Doesn't have man boobs (insert laughing here)
10) Loves that I can be silly, and will join in. (sanguine!!!)

Now some items on this list are must haves while others I can do without or help out with (nice hair). I think every single girl needs a list! So much fun!

Well there is part of my list. I want to see your list....I showed you mine!
In the comment section give me three things on the list. If you have a man, how did he compare to the list?

    1. Must be an on fire christian for God.
    2. Must LOVE and be good at cooking.
    3. Gotta love and appreciate music as much as I do. We don't have to like the same type, just have to appreciate it.

    :-) Loved your list Jen

I love that nice hair was number 2 on your list :) Also, it sounds like there may be a story be a story behind number 9... care to share?

The list I made when I was like, 12 (I have to wonder why I was thinking about marriage at that age), included things like being an ohio state fan and always recycling... I think my priorities may have changed a little since then.

I'd say a more current list would probably include: loves Jesus more than anything, including me, confident but not arrogant, treats others with respect and humility, and challenges me to be a better person. But nice hair would probably make the list, too ;)

    Ahahaha!

    I love number 1.

Um, I too had a list. But I'd have to dig it out of my basement and seeing that you have SEEN my basement you know that that would take me three weeks to a year.

SOOOOO, let's just say I got the important stuff off my list and the rest... yeah... not so much! :)

Ok, I’m sure I’ve made a list or two in my day. I’m also sure that I tore it up and threw it away repeatedly. Here’s the problem the list is ever evolving, morphing, changing because with age comes maturity and, hopefully, wisdom. Some things became so obvious that they are no longer on the list anymore. Things like job, education, hygiene things like that are just taken for granted. It is life’s little surprises that have taught me lessons that make the list—the true list—as the case may be. Here are just a few things on my “list.”

1.)Attraction/ Chemistry. As shallow as it seems, these things matter. They just do. One of my earlier boyfriends taught me this and probably not the way you think. He just wasn’t attractive, well, not to me anyway. I actually believed the old idioms that beauty is in the inside, love is blind, and the more you care about someone the more attractive they become. Except I didn’t realize, at the time, that I got it all backwards, It’s whether or not you are initially attracted to him that determines the course of how attracted you become. Either you have it or not, can’t force it or make it appear. It’s that initial attraction that defies logic, and the more you care, the more attractive they become to you.

Why is this particular quality so important to me though? Because when this particular guy complimented me, I wanted to say something kind in return. (He was my boyfriend after all.) The problem is that my mom taught me not to lie. It only took once, one lie about him being cute, handsome, hot, whatever. My stomach dropped out. This was not going to work. I just can’t lie, even the kind ones. I want to be with someone who I can tell the truth, and be truthfully crazy about him both in personality and looks. (Oh and for the record, he was a good looking guy. I’m just not into the tall skinny types I guess.)

2.)More Masculine than Me. Ok, before you get ideas that I’m some sort of macho Amazonian with hormonal issues, let me reassure you that is not the case. I dated this guy, whom I nicknamed The Woman. This guy taught me what I wasn’t, which was sensitive and emotional. After hours of conversation of him pouring out his soul, I realized this was not for me. No, I don’t want to hear about how a flower you saw reminded you of me. No, I don’t want discuss your ever changing feelings and how that make you feel. No, I don’t want to read our poetry together. And no, I don’t want to reassure you every time you get insecure when I talked to anyone else for too long, whether male or female. Seriously? Who ever said sensitive guys are better? If I wanted to date a girl, I would be a lesbian and as I don’t swing that way, I need a guy more butch than I am or at least equally butch.

3.)Backbone. I’m surprised at how much this has been an issue for me. There has been a string of guys, whom I dated, who just couldn’t get their words together around me. Guys just standing there, fidgeting nervously, until I initiated every question. Guys who call up my best friend to ask her personal questions about me; simple questions like what’s my favorite color or what my hobbies are. Questions I could easily answer if given the chance.

It doesn’t help matters that I love a good debate. So more than basic human interaction, I would like a guy unafraid to disagree with me, unafraid to form his own opinions, and unafraid when the debate gets a little too heated. I have the tendency to let my passion carry me away. Guys can be a little intimidated by it. I don’t mind losing the debate, but a guy needs a little backbone to see it through.

I'm a few weeks late here, but I'm going to do it anyway!!

    MUST HAVES:
    1) loves God more than anything! (including me! thanks for the reminder Julie)
    2) genuinely cares for people and shows it in all he does (he HAS to love my friends!)
    3) desires to work overseas (Africa?!?) or willing to travel frequently in support of my passions

DESIRED BUT NOT MUST HAVES (maybe...):
    1) TALL...come on people, I want to wear heals on a night out!
    2) Cowboy-ish. I have a soft spot for the rugged, manly "boots 'n hat" type of guy
    3) can enjoy a good chic-flick every now and then! Or at least not harass me while I cry my eyes out =D

There it is! Now...where is he?!
